5 simple self care ideas for busy mums

As a mum the concept of self-care or making time for yourself to relax might seem a little unrealistic. You probably know that when you do actually manage to get a break, have some time to yourself to just be you, you’re a lot happier, you’re a lot more patient, calm and life just seems to flow a bit easier.


This blog isn’t about you finding the time for an hour long daily meditation practice – ain’t nobody got time for that! It’s not about you feeling bad because you can’t remember the last time you did anything for yourself that you actually enjoyed. It’s simply to give you a few ideas of ways you can incorporate some head space into your day and to give yourself a bit of a pamper.


Taking a breather

I think breathing is one of the simplest but most effective ways to relax – it’s often really underestimated but can be a great way to give you some headspace. You don’t have to take yourself off, you don’t even have to close your eyes if you don’t want to.

Here’s a technique you could try:

Breathe in for the count of 4 and breathe out for the count of 7 – that longer out breath triggers your body’s calming reflex, if the numbers don’t work for you that’s ok! Just make sure that your out breath is almost twice as long as your in breath.


Having a bath 

Buy yourself a really bloody lovely bubble bath – I like the Neals Yard Aromatic Foaming Bath (pictured) or some magnesium salts for your bath. A mineral deficiency can make us feel crappy so a good way to get some is to put it in the bath and soak it up as you relax.

Pamper sesh

This is one of my favourites – it takes no time at all really but it makes me feel great! I give myself a mini facial before I go to bed – I use the calendula cleanser, rose facial toner and frankincense intense moisturiser all from Neals Yard.


Pep talk

Listening to a chapter of a positive or motivational book or podcast, inspirational YouTube video while you potter at home or I tend to read a chapter of a book while Rowe is asleep – I love all of this sort of stuff and it really gives me a boost. This is normally what I’ll do when I find myself getting sucked into a Facebook or Instagram scrolling marathon!

Essential oils

I’m REALLY loving the Neals Yard Womens Balance blend (pictured) – I put it in the diffuser or give it a sniff and while, if I’m honest it’s a bit floral smelling for me normally, it definitely is a great mood stabiliser for me and makes me feel a lot more balanced, especially when I’m due on! Another one of my faves, which again I’m not totally in love with smell wise, is the calming blend, but it’s definitely very calming!


I’m not saying for one minute that if you have a bath, listen to an audio book and sniff some oils you’re going to be transformed into a zenned out super mum (because I really don’t believe she exists), but rather than thinking you don’t have time to relax or you don’t have time for yourself and getting pissed off about it, doing one or two of these positive things or something else entirely, that is just as simple but more suited to you each day can make a huge difference to your emotional well-being.


I find being a mum really tough at times, I find it tougher when I’m forgetting about myself and putting everyone else’s needs before my own. If you’ve forgotten about you, this is your reminder to do something nice for yourself!
